Here’s how I feel about AI… It’s a big topic right now, with lots in the media and strong opinions on both sides. But overall, I’m not opposed to it, especially when it has a lot of potential to make life easier - like cutting down on tedious tasks like the washing up or tax returns.
In my current role as an interior design administrator, I actually like some of the admin jobs but there’s definitely ones that we can afford to never have to entertain again… Managing invoices, chasing payments, sorting through endless emails – the stuff that takes up so much time and is generally pretty dull. If it could get rid of these tasks, and free up some more time for the meaningful parts of work, then I see that as a major positive.
In terms of its more general role in creative industries, I find AI’s role intriguing. Every time a new form of AI emerges, there’s always concern about its impact on traditional art forms. But there’s been fear around this kind of innovation before. Photography for example, however scary it must’ve felt at the time, didn’t replace painting. So rather than gatekeep creativity as a preserve of the old world, I think we should let creatives embrace AI as something that can only be enhancing.
One thing I find AI useful for in my own life is meal planning. When I’m trying to eat in a way that supports my health, I use AI to generate structured meal plans. So for example if I’m trying to eat to balance my hormones, I’ll get it to generate me a meal plan. Whether it works is another thing, but devising such plans is something I’m normally put off by because there’s a cost, whereas this advice is free.
I’d say the main concern I have around AI is identity theft, particularly in the form of deepfakes. This is when I see it as something incredibly dangerous and threatening, especially for women. I’ve seen media reports where a woman’s identity is used to create misleading or harmful content without their consent. It’s scary because the technology looks so convincing! This I find unsettling and hope more protections are being put in place to stop this.
Looking ahead, I’d be more pro-AI if it could have an impact in making legal advice more accessible. Legal services can be prohibitively expensive, and many people struggle to get the help they need. If AI could provide reliable legal guidance at little to no cost, it could make a huge difference in ensuring fairness and accessibility for everyone. But ensuring the reliability and accuracy of such advice is vital.
The same goes for healthcare. If it has the potential to provide more efficient answers about health concerns, helping people get the information they need much faster than traditional methods, then I’m all for this. As long as the information is accurate and trustworthy and our information is kept safe.
So yes, I guess overall it’s a ‘yay’ from me, but this depends on how the next few months and years roll out.
