El Kaliouby's work focuses on enabling machines to understand human emotions, fostering more empathetic and intuitive interfaces. In her book Girl Decoded, it gives a descriptive insight into her past, but also outlines what drives her pursuit in Emotion AI. It’s quite a daunting idea for many reasons, but reassurance comes when you see what is motivating her. “Humanise technology, before it dehumanises us”, is quoted in the book and it makes sense that given so much of our communication is given through non-verbal cues, that technology needs to understand human emotion especially as we increasingly rely on it. Of course there are ethical implications that come with machines learning our most intimate information. Her work is interesting nonetheless!
