Fei-Fei Li, Godmother of AI

Known as godmother of AI for her work in computer vision and image recognition.

Fei-Fei Li is a pioneer in the field for many reasons. She is known as the godmother of AI for her work in computer vision and image recognition and when you see the list of her other accomplishments you’ll appreciate her integral her contributions to the field have been.

First, let's start with ImageNet. Li is the inventor of ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, a critical large-scale dataset and benchmarking effort that has been widely regarded as one of the three driving forces of the birth of modern AI and the deep learning revolution.

Then there’s Human-Centred AI. She co-founded and co-directs the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI). At HAI, Li's vision is committed to studying, guiding, and developing human-centred AI technologies and applications. She believes AI should improve the human condition and that AI tools don't have independent values, but rather reflect human values.

Li has also co-founded the national nonprofit AI4ALL, which aims to increase inclusion and diversity in AI education.

As well as this, Li has been advocating for the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR), which would provide the public sector and the academic world with computing and data resources to do more AI research and discovery. She envisions NAIRR as a national infrastructure for AI research that democratises the tools needed to advance discovery and innovation, providing academic and nonprofit AI researchers access to data, computing power, and training.

We’re not even done there. She has also published more than 400 scientific articles in top-tier journals and conferences in science, engineering, and computer science - quite the inspiration!
